Data Center Corridor Experience, Applied to Central Iowa
The Des Moines metro has become one of the country's busiest data center markets, with hyperscale campuses in West Des Moines and Altoona. We do the same anchorage work at Nevada's TRIC, so we know what operators, installers, and plan reviewers expect from a calc package.
Outside the data hall, Des Moines work looks different from our western markets: wind, snow drift, and frost depth govern instead of seismic. We engineer warehouses, metal buildings, apartments, and commercial buildings to those loads and submit to whichever city the parcel sits in.

What We Engineer in the Des Moines Metro
Data halls, the buildings around them, and the region's steady multifamily and commercial growth.
Data Center Anchorage
PE-sealed anchorage for server racks, PDUs, generators, switchgear, and mechanical equipment at West Des Moines and Altoona campuses, to code and to operator standards.
Metal Buildings & Warehouses
Design criteria for the supplier, reaction-report review, and frost-protected footings, thrust resistance, and slabs for metal buildings across Polk County.
Multifamily
Wood-frame and podium apartment projects in Des Moines, West Des Moines, Ankeny, Waukee, and Urbandale.
Commercial & Tenant Improvement
Retail, office, and light industrial work, including the structural changes tenant improvements bring — openings, rooftop equipment, mezzanines.
Equipment Anchorage
Generators, tanks, and rooftop units on commercial and industrial buildings where owners or specifications call for engineered anchorage.
Residential Additions
Second-story additions and structural modifications, which Des Moines-area building departments expect to see engineered.

Des Moines Code & Permitting Knowledge
Licensed in Iowa
Palisade Engineering is licensed in Iowa, Nevada, California, Arizona, and Utah. Operators and installers working multi-state data center rollouts can carry one anchorage standard and one engineering team across sites.
City of Des Moines Permit & Development Center
Des Moines permits, plan review, and inspections run through the Permit & Development Center, with applications accepted online.
West Des Moines Building Inspection
West Des Moines takes residential applications through its City Access Portal and commercial and multifamily packets by email. We prepare the package in the format each city asks for.
Wind, Snow & Frost Design
Central Iowa structures are governed by wind, snow and drift, and frost-protected foundations. We take design values from the code edition the local jurisdiction enforces and the site-specific hazard data for the address.

Des Moines Structural Engineering — FAQ
Iowa is a low-seismic state. Why do Des Moines data centers still need anchorage calcs?
Low seismic hazard does not mean no seismic requirement. Data centers are typically designed as essential or high-importance facilities, and the building code still requires nonstructural components to be anchored. Hyperscale operators also apply corporate anchorage standards across their whole portfolio, and those often go beyond the local minimum — so contractors on Des Moines-area campuses routinely need PE-sealed anchorage calculations.
Which building department reviews my project — Des Moines or West Des Moines?
They are separate cities with separate departments. The City of Des Moines Permit & Development Center handles permits, plan review, and inspections inside Des Moines and takes applications online. West Des Moines' Building Inspection Division takes residential applications through its City Access Portal and commercial and multifamily packets by email. Ankeny, Urbandale, Waukee, and Altoona each run their own reviews.
Are you licensed in Iowa?
Yes. Palisade Engineering is licensed in Iowa along with Nevada, California, Arizona, and Utah. Des Moines projects run on our remote-engineering process, with sealed drawings and calculations delivered electronically.
What drives structural design on a Des Moines metal building or warehouse?
In central Iowa, wind, snow and drift, and frost-protected foundations usually govern rather than seismic. On a metal building we set those design criteria for the supplier, review the manufacturer's reaction report, and design the footings, thrust resistance, and slab to match.
